Set in the magnificent outdoor setting of Andrews Amphitheatre on the UH Manoa campus, the first Manoa Jazz Festival promises a cool night of hot jazz with a world-class line-up of artists. Taking the stage first are Hawai`i favorites the Noel Okimoto `Ohana and the Honolulu Jazz Quartet (John Kolivas, Dan Del Negro, Adam Baron, and Tim Tsukiyama).

The evening`s headliner is saxophonist Devin Phillips and his band New Orleans Straight Ahead. Born and raised in New Orleans, Phillips has performed at international jazz festivals, and toured and recorded with top names such as Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Palmieri, The Headhunters, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Lenny Kravitz, and Los Hombres Caliente (with whom he recorded two award-winning albums). He formed New Orleans Straight Ahead in 2005, but Hurricane Katrina forced them to disband. Left with nothing but his sax and with his family scattered throughout the U.S., Phillips evacuated to Portland, Oregon. There he reformed New Orleans Straight Ahead with other musician evacuees. They bring the traditions of their hometown, intricate and rhythmic innovations, and youthful exuberance to old-school straight ahead styling.

Phillips and New Orleans Straight Ahead were recently selected by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the U.S. State Department of Education and Cultural Affairs to bring jazz around the world via the Rhythm Road American Tour Abroad Program. Phillips has also been involved in teaching jazz to underprivileged, middle school students.

CD releases by the Manoa Jazz Festival artists: Noel Okimoto`s "`Ohana," Honolulu Jazz Quartet`s "Sounds of the City" and "Tenacity," and Devin Phillips` "Wade in the Water."
