"Salaam" means "peace" and is also a greeting that people use in most Arabic cultures every day. The Salaam Ensemble performs Persian, Arabic, Turkish and Armenian vocal and instrumental music. The five musicians represent the splendid diversity and unity of cultures not only in America, but of people throughout the world today. Many of them have performed on soundtracks for Aladdin, The Mummy, The Black Stallion, and others. Their performance introduces the exotic and rare instruments, such as the oud (lute), nai (cane flute), kemence` (bowed spike fiddle), and darabuka or Egyptian tabla (goblet drum), interwoven with stories and the musicians` personal narratives.
The Salaam Ensemble premiered its first community concert at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles in August of 2005 and at `World City` at Disney Hall. It is directed by award-winning composer and artist/educator John Zeretzke. Advisor to the ensemble is the renowned music scholar, composer and Egyptian nai player, Dr. A. J. Racy.

A University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College presentation and part of a Performing Arts Presenters Tour. Sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Western States Arts Federation, and the UH Manoa Student Activity Program Fee Board.
