Sticking With It, Developing Voice as an Artist
For intermediate and advanced students who are already well-versed in techniques and materials of painting, the first four days of this intensive workshop use the Buddhist principle of non-attachment to investigate the possibilities of working and re-working the same canvas, creating a new painting each day. Explore the balance between `sticking to` and `letting go` while working in a large format. Discussions, videos, and individual guidance are provided to facilitate this process.
Building on the the previous week`s work, four additional sessions focus on the development of a personal direction and the refinement of each person`s work. Students are encouraged to work in any medium and on any scale. Discussions, slides and videos aid in further exploration, while instruction is primarily one-on-one.
MATERIALS: Bring to first class the following materials: pencil, writing paper or notebook, gesso, acrylic paint, basic painting supplies (palette & palette knives, water containers, a good variety of brush sizes, etc.), mixed media that you like (charcoal, pastels, ink, glue, etc.), paper towels (suggest Viva or Scott rag), combination lock for locker, and smock. (Or wear painting clothes.) One primed canvas, roughly 3`x4`, or 4`x 4`, or larger. Digital camera also suggested. If you buy supplies, save receipts in the event not everything is used. Materials for the second week of class will be decided by each student.
The studios at UH are very spacious. Because most people have space constraints in their own studios, participants are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity.
