Session 1: Taking Control of Your Camera (L12109) with David Ulrich - July 11 Learn the basics of using your camera and making images that reflect your intent and vision. Please bring your camera, any type, to all classes.
Session 2: The Power of Natural Light (L12110) with Tracy Wright Corvo - July 18 The quality of the light is one of the most expressive aspects of photography. Learn to creatively use and control natural light and understand the camera settings to capture or create the lighting effects that create compelling images.
Session 3: The Power of the Frame - Use of Camera Formats and Lenses (L12111) with Franco Salmoiraghi - July 25 The choice of camera format and lens focal length dramatically affect the look and feel of the resulting image. Learn to see and control what happens within the frame through composition, lens choice, and aperture / shutter speed settings.
Session 4: Capturing the Living Moment: People and Places (L12112) with Hugh Gentry - August 1 Take better photos of moving subjects. Review camera techniques, lens choice, composition, and technical issues such as ISO and shutter speed. Examine what makes a "good photo". And learn how to be prepared in the field for unforeseen events so that you may capture the moment.
Session 5: The Stylized Portrait & Expressive Color (L12113) with Cheyne Gallarde - August 8 Learn the process of creating a stylized portrait - part dramatic lighting, part storytelling. Explore everything from concept to creation including lighting techniques, the logic of lenses, locations, and expressive color as well as poses and techniques to get your subject relaxed and ready to shoot.
Session 6: Basic Scanning and Digital Printing (L12114) with David Ulrich - August 15 Learn the fundamentals of scanning prints and negatives. Explore basic digital printing techniques. Make prints of your digital images or negatives.
David Ulrich is a core faculty member and the program coordinator for Pacific New Media. He is an active photographer and writer whose work has been published in numerous books and journals.
