On Assignment: A Contemporary Approach to Documentary Photography

Focus on creative, aesthetic, and ethical issues related to documentary photography. Students create a portfolio of photographs that address contemporary social issues reflecting life in Honolulu.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of camera and photography principles and a digital camera

Filmmaker and photographer Sergio Goes’s work has been published and exhibited internationally, including shows at The Whitney Museum of American Art, The London Biennial, and in Hawai‘i at The Contemporary Museum and The Honolulu Academy of Arts. His documentary photography has twice been awarded the international Golden Light Award. His feature-length documentary Black Picket Fence was the recipient of HBO’s Documentary Feature Award and the Charles Guggenheim Emerging Artist Award.
