The objectives of this HD workshop are to better acquaint filmmakers with the High Definition (HD) formats so that they can make better informed creative and fiscal choices when it comes to working with HD formats in their filmmaking.
Topics include:
HD Production and Cameras
Filmmakers are provided with a basic knowledge of professional HD cameras and prosumer HD cameras and what to expect from different brands and formats.
HD Post-Production
Filmmakers review post-production solutions and work flows for both professional and prosumer HD formats.
Networking
An atmosphere is created where filmmakers can learn together and from one another.
Steve Szabo has worked in the film and video industry since 1990 as an editor, colorist, visual effects designer and more recently as a DVD/HD DVD author. His work experience includes several television series, scores of television commercials and a variety of other programs for many major clients. He is an Apple Certified Trainer in Final Cut Pro 6, Motion 3, DVD Studio Pro 4, Soundtrack Pro 2 and Final Cut Studio 2 and has received a number of awards for editing, effects and DVD authoring. Szabo is the owner of Digital Edge Hawaii in Honolulu. Tim Irwin began his career by editing for award-winning filmmaker Steve Olpin. They opened a production company called Oi Documentary Services focusing on documentaries, commercials, and behind-the-scenes production. Clients include Paramount Pictures, Fox Searchlight, Schwinn Bicycles, Fuel TV, Oakley Sunglasses, GT Bicycles, Liquid Force Wakeboards, Mongoose, NBC, and USA networks. In 2003, Irwin and Keith Schieron filmed we jam econo about a 1980s punk band called The Minutemen which has screened at more than 100 venues worldwide, and was licensed by the Sundance Channel recently as a part of their Documentary Days programming. Irwin is currently working on a series of on-air promotions for Fuel TV, as well as a documentary on 1990s rock band Jawbreaker. Andrew Sobkovich has been director of photography for over 30 years, working in film, single and multi-camera television, and High-Definition production. He has worked on television series, commercials and motion pictures. Being one of the early HD adopters, he photographed Damned If You Do, a theatrical short, produced by Sony Pictures High Definition Center to demonstrate the viability of HDCam origination and then HDCam to film transfer for projection. The film won Best Short Film at the Hollywood Film Festival. Since then he has been involved in bringing High Definition to productions including Chicago Hope, Touched by an Angel, Star Trek Enterprise, and Numb3rs. He was the supervising director of photography for SportsCentury at ESPN when the series changed to 24P production. His responsibilities included designing the new look for the series, developing the complete production path, and training and overseeing crews across the United States.
