An introduction to intellectual property (IP) law, including trade secrets, trademarks, patent law, copyright law, and state and federal IP protections to help students understand its role in developing technology startups, especially startups in software, life sciences, aquaculture, and energy.

The course consists of twelve sessions, three each week for four weeks. Each week a visiting entrepreneur presents his case study startup, and students interview and advise on IP issues relating to the startup.
Week One: Peter Kay presents a software case study.
Week Two: David Watumull introduces a life science case study.
Week Three: Bill Spencer discusses an aquaculture case study
Week Four: Dareen Kimura presents an energy case study.

Jay Fidell is a founder and principal of Bendet, Fidell, Sakai & Lee and has practiced business and real estate law with the firm since its inception in 1974. He has served on various community and professional boards, including the Building Owners and Managers Association, the Plaza Club, the Hawaii Opera Theatre, the High Tech Development Corporation, the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii, the Hawaii Strategic Development Corporation, and the Hawaii Science and Technology Council. Fidell has an abiding interest in tech and entrepreneurship and has been the host of ThinkTech Hawaii on Hawaii Public Radio since 2001. He has also developed a number of websites for various non-profits.
