Mastering the Expressive Digital Image: From Camera to Print

This class encompasses the entire digital imaging workflow, from camera capture through editing in Adobe Photoshop for image enhancement, and finally to the printing stage. Participants learn effective camera use for differing file settings (photographing in Camera Raw and jpg), methods of color and tonal correction in Photoshop and an introduction to fine digital printing on PNM`s wide format Canon printers.

Class sessions include lecture and demonstration, field work with a camera, hands-on editing in Photoshop, critique of work, and digital printing. Participants should bring a digital camera, capture cards for a minimum of 50-60 exposures, and a card reader. If you do not have a card reader, PNM can supply one. The class is co-taught by two of PNM`s core faculty, both of whom are highly accomplished in photography and digital imaging.

Prerequisite: A basic knowledge of photography and the ability to navigate the Mac interface.

Day One:

1. Camera Use
o RAW format
o jpg format, file size and image parameters
o Exposure settings
o ISO, white balance, exposure compensation

2. Learning to See with a Camera
o Slide show
o Exploration of aesthetic choices: frame, subject, moment, tonal/color, light
o What is your vision?

3. One hour field session, download images
o Class critique

4. Fundamental Photoshop tools for RAW processing and image editing (tonal and color correction)

Day Two:

1. Morning field trip to location of interest. Visual assignment

2. Download and edit images using Adobe Bridge. Editing lecture.

3. Color and tonal correction of 2-3 images

4. Printing lecture and fine print demonstration. Participants make fine prints of 1-2 images

David Ulrich is a photographer and writer whose work has been featured in numerous publications and exhibitions. His work combines traditional photography with digital imaging. Ulrich has taught digital applications for Pacific Imaging Center, Kodak`s Center for Creative Imaging, New York University, and others. For 15 years, he was an associate professor and served as the chair of the photography department at The Art Institute of Boston. He is a core faculty member of Pacific New Media and is the chair of the visual arts department at Cornish College in Seattle. Michael Gilbertis the founder and director of The Pacific Center for Photography, a photography gallery and digital printing business in Wailuku, Maui. An active photographer, his clients include Mercedes Benz, Hallmark, Four Seasons, and Disney and his corporate sponsors include Olympus, Canon, Imacon, Gretag, Breathing Color, CompUSA, and Quantum Instruments. Gilbert`s work is permanently held in the International Museum of Photography and he has been a featured artist, instructor, and headline speaker at Photokina, PhotoPlus, Imaging USA, WPPI, Triangle Institute and a host of universities and museums worldwide. His studio locations are in Maui, Hawai‘i and Paris, France.
