An introduction to the basic structure of the Japanese language, including proper pronunciation, grammar, basic vocabulary, and simple everyday conversation.
Elementary I follows lessons 1 through 6 and Elementary lessons 6+ of Japanese for Busy People, Volume I. In addition to the lessons, classes include language study through games, activities, demonstrations of Japanese culture, and practice with experienced Japanese language speakers.
Reina Hirose Horton was born in Honolulu and raised in Tokyo, Japan. She received her BA from Waseda University, where she studied Political science. She is attending Hawaii Pacific University’s MA TESOL program. She worked as a substitute teacher at UH Outreach College’s Japanese class, and tutors Japanese to high school and university students. Her current interests are motivation in language acquisition and the connection between language and identity.
Janice Mitsuko Terakawa has lived and worked in Japan for over 15 years. She graduated from the University of Hawaii - Manoa and also has a M.S.Ed (Masters of Science in Education) and BCLAD (Bilingual, Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development Credential) in Japanese. Currently, Ms. Terakawa is a Special Education teacher for the State of Hawaii Department of Education.
