Beginning Watercolor: Finding Your Way in the Process

Discover a fresh approach to watercolor painting as you develop skills in drawing, brushwork, paint handling, composition, and color. Class sessions include demonstrations, opportunities to apply skills, discussions, and critiques.


Minimal materials are needed. Bring what you already have, or the following supplies are suggested:


Watercolor Paints (recommend Grumbacher Academy, 1 tube each)

  • Carmine or Alizarin Crimson
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Cadmium Orange
  • Cadmium Yellow Deep
  • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • Sap Green
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Raw Sienna
  • Ivory Black
  • Raw Umber
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Burnt Umber
  • 9" x 12" Watercolor Paper, 140 lb pad or block
  • Small folding plastic watercolor palette with 12 wells on one side
  • Round Kolinsky #7 watercolor brush
  • Kneaded eraser
  • #2B pencil


    Art supply sources include: C2F, 875 Waimanu-bring proof of enrollment (593-9090), University of Hawai`i at Manoa Campus Center Bookstore (946-6612), Hawaiian Graphics at 1923 South Beretania Street (973-7171), and One Shot Supplies at 815A Waiakamilo Road (841-7683).


    If you are concerned about toxic potential of paints, look for an ACMI seal (AP, CP, AP+PC, or Health Label or HL+Non-Toxic), signifying that the formula has been checked against both chronic (long term) and acute (immediate) toxicity.

    Michael Genger is a popular instructor of watercolor and printmaking at The Honolulu Academy of Art. He has exhibited with the Hawai`i Water Color Society, Honolulu Printmakers, and the Image Foundation. His work can be found in private and corporate collections in the U.S. and Asia.
