PRAXIS II subject assessments measure a student`s knowledge of the content area s/he is preparing to teach. A prospective teacher applying for a mathematics teaching position with the Hawai`i State Department of Education (DOE) must take and pass the PRAXIS II Mathematics: Content Knowledge (0061) as a measure of conceptual knowledge. Students applying for certification or advanced degrees in education may also have to pass this test for admission into the programs.
Students participate in this self-directed web-based program, beginning with a sample test followed by instruction in each concept area. The program is designed to work interactively with tutorials, activities, and tests in exam critical material on the PLATO Web Learning Network. Additional resources recommended within the program add depth and dimension to the study material. Students are expected to commit to working through assignments with deliberate preparation and discipline. Study sessions of at least 30 minutes, and up to an hour or more, help prepare for the extended time required in the actual testing situation.
Once registered, students may access the program through computer centers at UH Manoa, Maui CC, Kaua`i CC, and West Hawai`i University Center, Kona. Students can also access the program from home, providing that their computer systems meet the following requirements:
- Computer processor (Mac or PC) speed of 366mhz or higher
- Operating systems: Mac OS 9.2,10.1.4,10.2 or Windows 98, 2nd edition, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Professional 2/SP3, or Windows XP
- Broadband internet access: cable modem or DSL ("dial-up" access does not work)
- Web browser: Explorer or Netscape
- Sufficient memory to download and install plug-ins. Everything you need is downloadable from the web-based program.
The UHM College of Education coordinates this program to support anyone who needs assistance in preparing for the Praxis II: Mathematics qualifying examination for teacher licensure. The interactive software was developed by PLATO Learning Corporation and refined to meet local needs.
