This course is a practical introduction to the basic concepts and techniques of classical ballet. As a participant, you gain ways to:

  • Recognize and demonstrate beginning level ballet.
  • Understand basic human anatomy as it relates to balletic body movement.
  • Demonstrate improved physical conditioning, muscular control, and flexibility.
  • Develop an understanding of classroom etiquette in a dance environment.
  • Begin to develop a critical artistic eye and voice with respect to dance.

The physical conditioning aspect of the class incorporates somatic methods such as yoga and Pilates.

Notes on what to wear: Ballet attire should allow for movement and let the instructor see your body alignment to correct placement problems and help you avoid injuries. Students should wear leotards and tights, or tight fitting yoga pants with a tight fitting t-shirt, as well as ballet shoes. No bare midriff tops or bare chests, please. Also no loose clothing that hides the feet, knees, hips, or spine. Long hair should be pulled up off the neck, away from the face, and secured on the head to allow for turning and jumping without obstruction. Remove loose jewelry, watches, bracelets, and anklets for class.

Ballet shoes or slippers, required to perform the exercises correctly and most efficiently, may be purchased at Steppin` Up (corner of King St. and University Ave.) for approximately $17-$20.

Chansri A. Green is a UH graduate student in dance. She attended the Joffrey Ballet School and the Julliard School before receiving her BFA at Columbia College in Chicago.
