This course is for guitarists who have acquired basic slack key techniques learned in the beginning course and wish to progress to the intermediate level, and for intermediate players who want to expand their repertoire. Techniques include an understanding of tablature notation, open and closed positions, bass alternation, slides, pull-offs, hammering, and harmonics. Study new arrangements of popular Hawaiian melodies that incorporate new chord positions and movements.
Lance Takamiya, BS, is an arranger, composer, and performer of slack key. Since 1994, he has taught at UHM. He studied the slack key tradition with Ozzie Kotani, through the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts’ Master Apprentice Program. He offers students the opportunity to expand their repertoire by arranging new pieces for his intermediate and advanced slack key classes.
