Focus on the art of editing for both documentary and fiction films through a combination of lecture, screening film clips, and in-class exercises to get a clear understanding of how editors work and some of the aesthetic issues editors grapple with when cutting films. Special emphasis is placed on looking at how editors use tone, pace, rhythm, and other tools to create dynamic and engaging films. Other topics covered include theories of editing and how professional editors work in both the documentary and fiction film worlds. This is not a technical class, instead it focuses on ideas and issues; students of all levels are welcome.
Sam Green is the director of numerous documentaries, including Utopia, Part 3: The World`s Largest Shopping Mall (2009) and Clear Glasses (2009) both screened at the 2009 Sundance film Festival; and the 2004 Academy Award&endash;nominated The Weather Underground, which tells the story of a group of radical young women and men who tried to violently overthrow the U.S. government during the late 1960s and 1970s. Green currently teaches at the University of San Francisco. He`s online at www.samgreen.to
