Not even one century ago, wara zoori, or rice straw sandals, were still typical outdoor foot wear in Japan. Jean says, "I can still recall the sound the wara zoori made when you stepped on the fresh snow. But imagine how it felt if you had to walk for thirty minutes on half-inch thick open straw sandals after school, when the snow was more like melted shave ice!"
Today, wara zoori are enjoying new popularity as nuno zoori, or fabric slippers. With kimono materials brought from Japan, make nuno zoori to display, or if you so choose, to wear. After an introduction to the process and preparation of materials,y ou can reasonably expect to finish making a pair of nuno zoori by the end of class.
Jean Sakihara earned her kimono teaching certificate from Habuki Kyoto Kimono School. She is a writer of Japanese language texts and in 1982 established the University Laboratory School Kimono Program, which she chaired for many years. A passionate supporter of kimono culture, Jean remains involved as advisor of the program.
Mr. Kaoru Deguchi is a nuno zoori specialist who will be visiting Hawai`i and volunteering his time during the workshop. Deguchi-senseiteaches how to make nuno zoori at a cultural center in the city of Kanazawa, Japan.
