Digital Imaging Certificate Fall `09

Digital communications media has revolutionized the way we live and do business. Information technology and digital imaging tools have created a wealth of new professional opportunities and a need for re-training many employees and freelance workers. Over the past five years, digital imaging and digital photography have radically changed the means by which capture and transmission of images takes place. Image-making and editing, once the exclusive province of photographers and graphic designers, has become highly accessible through digital tools to many individuals and employees. These developments have dramatically transformed the way in which images are used in the business, educational, and personal environments.

Pacific New Media, UH Manoa Outreach College, has designed a program to take advantage of these opportunities and challenges. The Pacific New Media Certificate program offers a comprehensive course of study in digital imaging, balancing creativity and technology with the fundamentals of lens-based media to learn the skills required by these rapidly changing developments in industry, government, education, and creative fields.

Students explore the technical skills, visual issues, professional practices, and creative capacity of this rapidly growing, diverse, and vital industry. The curriculum has been planned by a team of professionals and educators to meet the needs of all individuals wishing to upgrade their professional expertise or learn the entire scope of digital imaging, from photography and digital capture, to image editing and printing, commercial software programs, visual language and theory, through the entire imaging workflow. Over 30 courses would be offered with flexible scheduling options possible.

The Pacific New Media certificate program is designed to enhance students` job skills and increase employability. The program will meet the needs of students whether they are making creative images for professional applications, making a career change, upgrading talents and capabilities or simply interested in the creative application of new media. A new breed of creative professionals trained in the theory and technology of imaging is needed in all industries to adapt to the changing communications environment.

The faculty consists of cutting-edge professionals from both Hawaii and the U.S. mainland. To insure responsiveness to new developments in the industry, Outreach College is developing collaborative relationships with innovative companies such as Adobe Systems, Apple Computer, Epson, and Canon. As new software solutions become available, Pacific New Media offers classes and workshops immediately following release of new programs and upgrades to existing ones.

The program offers a highly effective, time-efficient manner of building a stable and adaptable set of skills to function in the fields of photography, design, publishing, printing, library science, archiving and museum work, non-profits, film and television, fine-arts, and in all industries where digital imaging is necessary. Students will learn the technology, visual skills, professional skills, and the creative capacity to rapidly become a part of the diverse and vital communications industry. Individuals with substantial digital imaging skills are faced with many opportunities for satisfying, lucrative, and contributory careers.
