With two deep diving submersibles, underwater robotics capabilities, several ocean going research vessels and a range of tools to operate on the sea floor, the University of Hawaii is staking out a leadership position in the blossoming field of undersea technology. This talk will look at some of the capabilities, some of the new discoveries and new directions this work is going. New technology has made the deep sea a new frontier. New discoveries are showing us a new world just beyond our shore.
Dr. John Wiltshire is Acting Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration`s Undersea Research Center for Hawaii and the Western Pacific. He is also Chairman of the Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering at the University of Hawaii. Formerly, Dr. Wiltshire worked in the mining and oil industries in Canada where he obtained a B.S. in geology from Carleton University. Dr. Wiltshire obtained his Ph.D. in 1983 in geological oceanography from the University of Hawaii. He served as Ocean Resources Manager for the State of Hawaii before joining the faculty of the University of Hawaii. He is a fellow of the Marine Technology Society and was general co-chairman of the Oceans 2001 conference in Honolulu, which brought 1500 marine technologists to the State. He will again be Chairman of this major ocean conference in 2011 bringing 2000 of the world`s marine technology leaders to Waikoloa on the Big Island. He is currently Vice Chair of the Hawaii Section of the Marine Technology Society and the professional committee chair for Marine Mineral Resources. Wiltshire is an advisor to the U.S. Secretary of the Interior on offshore oil and gas and minerals issues as part of the Outer Continental Shelf Policy Advisory Committee. He is the author of 90 scientific publications largely dealing with marine minerals, submersible science, mineral economics, sustainable development of marine resources and environmental management.
