This weekend workshop examines the process of making documentary films and videos, from the early stages of coming up with and researching ideas through the distribution of a finished project. The workshop consists of a lively combination of lecture and discussion with screenings of clips from the instructor`s films and other documentaries as illustration. Special emphasis is placed on researching a project, fundraising, conducting interviews, working with archival footage, and successful strategies for bringing a project to fruition.

Note: credit students can register for ACM390 in summer extension.

Documentary filmmaker Sam Green’s most recent feature-length film, The Weather Underground, tells the story of a group of radical young women and men who tried to violently overthrow the US government during the late 1960s and ‘70s. The film premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, was nominated for an Academy Award, included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial, and has screened widely around the world. Green`s previous film, The Rainbow Man/John 3:16, premiered at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival and has screened at festivals worldwide. Green currently teaches at the University of San Francisco.
