SUMMER SCHOLAR PARENT QUESTIONS

  1. Why should my student take UH classes while still in high school?

The best reason to take college classes while still in high school is for the students to prove to themselves that they can do college level work.

  2. How will this help in the future?

Students can get freshman college classes out of the way, which relieves pressure their freshman year. When applying at a college, proving that the student has done college work before finishing high school can put that student ahead of students who haven't passed any college courses.

  3. How secure is the UH campus?

The UH campus has its own campus security. Students will not be staying in the dorms. Classes are in the mornings, for the most part, which is statistically the most secure part of the day.

  4. Will my student get individual attention?

That is up to the student. If a student needs help, the professors have office hours that are given to each student in the first class. Just like any college student, it is up to the individual to seek that help.

  5. Is there any follow up by the Summer Scholar staff during the session?

Each Summer Scholar is contacted during the first week of classes. The staff confers with the student to see if everything is okay. Advice is given, depending on how the student feels they are performing. Each student is again contacted later in the semester to see how he or she is doing.

  6. Are there any penalties for withdrawing from classes?

If a student is having such problems that they are not able to finish the session, there is a drop period. (Check the bulletin for dates) During the drop period, a student can withdraw from the class and get a "W" grade. If a student does not go through the withdrawal process and just stops going to classes, they will get an "F" which will be on their permanent record at UH.

  7. Does Outreach College have any type of orientation for students and parents?

Outreach College has Open House/ Orientations for students and parents to introduce the Summer Scholars to each other and an introduction to the campus and campus amenities. Information on these sessions will be sent to all accepted applicants.
