Generally, International students are required to obtain a visa if they wish to enter the United States.  Advance travel planning and early visa application are important.

Before you can apply for an F-1 student visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate, UH Manoa Outreach College must first accept you into the Summer Sessions and then issue you an I-20 Form (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status).

WHEN DO I REQUEST THE I-20 FROM UH MANOA OUTREACH COLLEGE?

  1. Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country, early, to find out what you need to do to apply for an F-1 visa and how long the process will take. 
  1. Before you request an I-20, you must APPLY FIRST and be accepted for the Summer.
  1. After you have been accepted, we will email the I-20 Request Form to you.

Visa processing times may vary by country.  We suggest you submit your I-20 Request Form and documents at least 3 months before the start of your summer course(s).

HOW DO I GET THE I-20 FROM UH MANOA OUTREACH COLLEGE?

After you have received the I-20 Request Form from our office, please provide the following.  You may send your documents via secure

  1. Outreach College I-20 Request Form
  1. Copy of your Bank Statement, stating sufficient funds to study at UH ManoaBank Statement must be translated to English.
  • Bank Statement must be translated to English.
  • Bank Statement must be dated within 6 months of the start of your summer course(s).
  • Bank Statement needs to include both the cost of tuition and $1600 per month for living expenses.
  1. Copy of your Passport
  1. Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Clearance
  • Your document should state that you have received 2 doses of the live measles vaccine, with at least 1 of the 2 being an MMR vaccine.
  • First dose must have been given after January 1, 1968 and on or after your first birthday.
  • Second dose must have been given at least 4 weeks after the first dose.
  • MMR immunization may be waived if you were born before 1957 OR you provide serologic evidence of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella.
  1. Provide a copy of your visa if you have one.

I-20 ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS

Full-Time Status

  • Undergraduate Students: must be registered in a minimum of six (6) credit hours for the SUMMER SESSION TERM that is being requested. 
  • Graduate Students: must be registered in a minimum of four (4) credit hours for the SUMMER SESSION TERM that is being requested.

Distance Education Course

  • You can only register for one (1) online distance education course per summer session term.
  • You must register for a regular in-classroom instruction course or a hybrid course for the remainder of your minimum credit hour requirement.
  • A hybrid course is a combination of online and in-classroom instruction.

Health Insurance

  • You must have comprehensive medical insurance for the duration of their study at UHM.
  • Health care is very expensive in the U.S. and a hospital stay of even a day or two may cost thousands of dollars.

  • Include a copy of your current I-20 with your Summer application.
