Duane Padilla
After earning degrees from Northwestern University and Yale University, concert artist and educator Duane Padilla began his performance career as an orchestral musician performing with the National Repertoire Orchestra, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, the New Haven Symphony, and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. A founding member of The Hot Club of Hulaville, Duane’s more recent artistic endeavors have turned towards jazz. He has opened concerts for jazz giants Martin Taylor, John Jorgensen, and John Pizzarelli. He currently performs with the Mana Music Quartet, whose recent album Queen Lili’uokalani has been nominated by the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts for a 2021 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Instrumental Album of the Year.
Tommy James
Over a span of almost five decades, pianist-arranger Tommy James has worked with a wide group of artists both in the studio and in live performances on six continents. A 30-year member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, he served as its conductor-director from 2011-2017 and performed with a Who’s Who list of musicians including Freddie Hubbard, Roy Ayers, Cleo Laine, Maureen McGovern, Lionel Hampton, Roberta Flack, and Roy Ayers.
John Kolivas
John Kolivas, one of Hawaiʻi’s premier bassists, is also an educator and composer. In 1980, John was hired to play bass and work as Musical Director for the Keola & Kapono Beamer show in Waikīkī, beginning his long association with Keola. Relocating to New York City in 1982, John performed in musical theater shows on tour and on Broadway in addition to playing jazz. In 1997, he successfully auditioned with the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra (formerly Honolulu Symphony) in which he has performed to the present. In 2001, John formed the critically acclaimed Honolulu Jazz Quartet, which has recorded three albums and currently performs on Oʻahu. In his jazz career, John has had the privilege of performing with jazz giants including Herb Ellis, Delfeayo Marsalis, George Benson, and many others.
The concert series is a joint effort between UH Mānoa Outreach College, UH Mānoa Music Department,the East-West Center Arts Program, and Friends of Mānoa Library.
