The Chris Yeh Quintet plays a mix of jazz, funk and pop and world music. The Quintet features: Chris Yeh on saxophone, Alex Morrison on bass, Bailey Matsuda on piano, Chuck James on drums, and Elliott Maker on trumpet.

 

Chris Yeh moved back to Honolulu in 1996 after a successful career in jazz combos and big bands on the East Coast. Since his return he has performed with various local groups, including his own jazz quintet and the funk/pop band Mango Season. During non-jazz hours, he works as an attorney in downtown Honolulu.

 

Alex Morrison plays both upright and electric basses in a variety of styles ranging from straight ahead jazz to Americana. Some of the local and national artists he works with include Laurie Lewis, Barbara Higbie, Hawaiian Style Band, Gypsy 808, and Hook and Line. Alex has a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa.

 

Bailey Matsuda has been an influential force in Hawai‘i’s music scene over several decades. He received his Master’s degree in Music Composition from the University of Hawai‘i. Bailey’s knowledge of music has allowed him to perform, compose, arrange, orchestrate, produce, and teach. Currently, Bailey teaches at Kamehameha Schools and continues to perform throughout Honolulu.

 

Chuck James is a jazz drummer and educator. Born and raised in Canada, he worked as a drummer in Los Angeles doing club work before moving to Hawaii in 1972. He has played with Jimmy Borges, Betty Lou Taylor,Don Ho, Gabe Baltazar, Andy Bumatai, Dave Brubeck, Les McCann, and Glenn Campbell. He is CEO and founder of the Chuck James Music School.

 

New York city born, musician, producer, and composer; Elliot Maker is a lover and maker of music. He began his professional life at a young age playing gigs with the popular soul group the “Soul Techniques.” Elliot has a Bachelor’s degree from the Crane School of Music and a Master’s in Digital Media and Instructional design from Southern Illinois University. He continues to perform and produce with his trumpet and piano regularly.

 

Jim Guss is a jazz guitarist and composer who grew up Honolulu. He attended UH, graduated from the Berklee College of Music, and later relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah. Jim has performed with many notable jazz artists including Peter Erskine, Mark Egan, Frank Catalano, Danny Gotlieb, and the Honolulu Symphony Summer Pops series. He has performed at numerous jazz festivals, and plays jazz regularly with his trio in venues throughout Salt Lake City.

 

The concert series is a joint effort between UH Mānoa Outreach College, UH Mānoa Music Department,the East-West Center Arts Program, and Friends of Mānoa Library.
