Ready to earn a micro-credential? Start here.
Earn a stand-alone micro-credential or earn a micro-credential as a current student:
- To pursue a micro-credential as a professional or lifelong learner (outside of a degree program), please apply to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Outreach College under the Non-Degree Seeking, Unclassified Programs option. There is no cost to apply and applications are generally processed within 5-10 business days.
- If you are currently a UH Mānoa student, you can add a micro-credential to your existing studies without any application.
Register for your courses:
- Once your application has been processed, or if you are currently enrolled, you can register for your courses via STAR GPS.
- Be sure to check the micro-credential program page for pre-requisites or specific course sequences.
Complete the Statement of Intent form
- Complete the Statement of Intent form and indicate the micro-credential you are interested in.
- You will receive an email notification confirming receipt of your form
Complete your courses and claim your digital badge:
- Complete and pass all of the required courses required for the micro-credential.
- After successfully finishing your coursework, you will receive information on how to claim your shareable digital badge to showcase your new skills.
About This Micro-Credential
This micro-credential involves three Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) courses taught through partnerships with Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan and Konan University in Kobe, Japan. Through real-time virtual collaboration with students in Japan, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of cultural diversity, global interconnectedness, and your own identities in a rapidly globalizing world. This experience enhances academic and personal growth while preparing you to thrive in diverse, international environments—an increasingly valuable asset in today’s global job market.
How to Get Started
Enroll in three courses designed for global learning.
• ES 422 requires completion of at least one DH or DS course or instructor consent. All courses are offered fully online through synchronous COIL classes, allowing you to participate in real-time dialogue with international peers. ES 101 is open to all students and will complete the DS requirement for ES 422; no previous experience with Ethnic Studies is required.
Coursework
Complete three 3-credit courses: ES 101 (Introduction to Ethnic Studies), ES 213 (Race, Class, Gender in Popular Culture), and ES 422 (Mixed Race Identities, Multiracial Experiences). All courses are delivered fully online with synchronous components that connect students in Hawaiʻi with peers in Japan for collaborative projects, discussions, and cultural exchange.

Stackability
Earning this micro-credential puts you on a pathway toward an Ethnic Studies certificate, Ethnic Studies major, or any Social Sciences major at UH Mānoa. All 9 micro-credential credits apply directly toward bachelor’s degrees at UH Mānoa. This program is particularly valuable for students pursuing international careers, as it showcases global experience and international collaboration to employers.
