About the Instructor

Sami L.A. Akuna is a director, performer, choreographer, and educator with expertise in dance in the pacific, new media, and indigenous dance studies. Akuna has performed, curated, and presented original performances in Hawai‘i, nationally, and internationally across Asia, Europe, and the Pacific.

Summer 1 (12-Day Intensive – June 5-16)

The intensive includes lectures and discussions as well as attendance at performance events, ceremonies, movement exchange and talk story sessions. Class meetings may take place at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Hawai‘i Convention Center, Capitol Modern, The Hawai‘i State Art Museum, the Bishop Museum, Royal Hawaiian Center, Kūhiō Beach Hula Mound, Kapi‘olani Bandstand, and Pālama Settlement.

Participants must be able to attend all assigned performance events, participate in exchange with dancers, and meet for discussion after the performances. No prior knowledge of the performing arts needed to enroll.
