ASAN 491I: Women’s Rights in South Asia

About the Instructor
Haider Rifaat, MA, is a Pakistani journalist and currently a second-year PhD scholar of Political Science at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Born in Fairfax, Virginia and raised in Islamabad, Pakistan, Rifaat aligns his South Asian heritage with his passion to bring real-time legislative change for marginalized groups, especially women and children.

Learn about women’s rights in South Asia from a historical, cultural, legalistic, and political perspective, spotlighting issues of gender-based violence, missed economic opportunities, political rights and mobilization efforts to counter social injustices.
Students will learn about women’s rights issues in the context of all South Asian countries using a mix of case studies and journalistic/research articles.
