ERTH 111: Introduction to Volcanoes
How do volcanoes shape the landscape and impact your life?
About the Instructor
Dr. Terry Naumann began developing and teaching online geology courses for the University of Hawai‘i in 2017 after he retired from the University of Alaska Anchorage. His research focused on volcanoes, but his primary focus has always been as an educator in the geological sciences. Normally seen crossing continents via motorbikes, he brings his overwhelming enthusiasm for the study of the planet to UH Mānoa and is thrilled to be a part of the teaching faculty.

Summer 2 (Online)
This course is an introduction to how volcanoes work and how their processes shape the landscape and impact your lives. This course is a GER offering so it covers a wide range of applicable topics. At the completion of the course you will have a general understanding of volcanic processes including the description and classification of volcanoes, volcanic eruptions, and volcanic deposits.
Ever wonder why some why some volcanoes only erupt smooth flowing lavas while others violently explode with large clouds of ash? Or why in certain climates volcanoes actually attract people to live on their slopes rather than scaring them away? Or why volcanoes are not distributed evenly accross the surface of the Earth? These are just a few of the topics that are covered in Introduction to Volcanoes.
