About the Instructor
Julie A. Iezzi, Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance, has translated and directed four large scale kabuki productions at UHM. Guest artist Ichikawa Monnosuke VIII is a veteran kabuki actor, debuting at age six and playing a wide range of male and female characters in traditional and “super kabuki” for over fifty years. Monnosuke led training for the 2024 100th anniversary UHM English-language kabuki production, and is committed to continuing the legacy of UHM kabuki.

The UHM Summer Kabuki Training Institute offer this intensive Kabuki movement and vocal training, with professional kabuki actor, Ichikawa Monnosuke VIII. Two levels, beginners and advanced beginners, with a culminating recital on the final day of the course.
This opportunity to train in kabuki with a professional is truly unique. Nowhere else in the world—not even in Japan—can one train intensively in kabuki. This inaugural year of the Kabuki Summer Training Institute, with annual two-week training to be offered every summer, enables returning students to continue building their skills.
Fulfills the general educational requirement: DA and counts toward Upper Division electives. MAJORS: Counts towards 3 credits of acting requirements for BFA: Theatre Concentration; or 3 credits towards Hawaiian/Asian/Pacific Performance/History requirement for BA: Theatre Concentration
