Steven Holmes received his PhD from UH Mānoa, and is currently working on publishing his book,    Exploding Empire: Imagining the Future of Nationalism and Capitalism.

This course will explore the literary history and philosophical discussions surrounding “Popular Literature,” focusing on the emergence of the mass cultural genre system. As a case study, we will particularly focus on speculative narratives and “fantasy” from across time, ranging from medieval era texts  such as the Lais of Marie de France to 20th century novels such as C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
